　　　　安西茂との不幸な結婚生活に終止符をうったふみ子は、二児を抱えて実家に戻った。たまたま、ふみ子とは幼友達のきぬ子の良人森卓が外地から引揚げて来たのを機に、北海タイムスの山上家では短歌のつどいが催され、勧められるままに何首かを詠んだふみ子は絶讃を浴びた。その夜、見送りの途すがら、森のかけた激励の言葉は、ふみ子の心に明るい灯をともした。ある日、仲人の杉本夫人が来て、離婚手続の済んだことを知らせたが、長男の昇だけは良人の許に帰さなければならなかった。そんなある日、森が急病で死んだ。泣くにも泣けない気持でふみ子は森の写真を見つめるのだった。安西家からこっそり昇をつれ戻し、親子水入いらずで東京に職を見つけようとしたふみ子は、乳癌で札幌病院に入院した。先頃「短歌時代」に新人作家の募集があった時、森によって送られた彼女の短歌が入選し、歌壇の話題となっていることを東京日報の大月からの便りで知った山上が病院に駈けつけたのは、彼女のみずみずしい乳房が切りとられる日であった。手術後、ふみ子は元気だったが、ある日、同室の患者の新聞に自分の余命いくばくもないと記されているのを見て愕然とした。そして勝気な彼女はことさらに元気を装い、東京から来た大月に求婚したり、無暴な振舞が多かった。大月が社に呼び戻された数日後、この若き閨秀歌人の遺体も屍室に運ばれたのだった。初夏の緑が映える一日、支忽湖のほとりに昇やあい子と立った大月は、ふみ子のノートを、子供たちは手にしたリラの花を湖面に投げるのだった。
